Professor Craig Rodger, University of Otago
Aurora is one of Nature’s wonders – and is caused by processes that start on the Sun 150 million kilometres from Earth. Aurora is common in the polar regions, but during disturbed periods can be seen closer to the equator. We are now roughly around solar maximum, when aurora and linked processes are most common. In this presentation Craig will talk about the science of the aurora, but also how aurora relates to space weather – changes in the environment on and around the Earth that affect our technological systems. He will introduce this hazard and his research on possible impacts to New Zealand’s energy networks.
