Associate Professor Arend Merrie
MB ChB, PhD, FRACS, MInstD

Arend trained in General Surgery in New Zealand gaining his Fellowship and a PhD on colorectal cancer in 2001. Following this he completed a post fellowship training programme in Colorectal Surgery in Auckland and Oxford.
He has particular interest and expertise in minimally invasive approaches to colorectal surgery & translational research. His clinical interests are in colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease with a special interest in the genetics of colorectal cancer.
Arend is an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Auckland and works as a Colorectal Surgeon at Te Whatu Ora-Te Toka Tumai/Auckland Hospital and in private practice at the Auckland Colorectal Centre. Arend has been Head of the Colorectal Unit, Director of General Surgical Training, Clinical Director of General Surgery & Director of Surgical Services at Auckland District Health Board. He has also been an examiner in General Surgery & the New Zealand Senior Examiner in General Surgery for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is author of over 100 peer reviewed publications and a supervisor of postgraduate students at the University of Auckland. He is also a board member for the Empowerment Trust & Te Tāpui Atawhai/ Auckland City Mission. In his spare time Arend can be found outdoors with his family and is a keen back country cyclist, tramper and skier.

Arend will take you on a journey through colorectal cancer discussing major advances in genetics, detection, imaging, neoadjuvant treatment, minimally invasive surgery & multimodal treatment.
